 Sarina's Story

“Now, this is a story all about how my life got flipped-turned upside down and I’d like to take a minute, just sit right there I’ll tell you how I became the….”Ok so I’m not quite the Prince of Bel Air, in fact nowhere near it! Thanks for wanting to know more about the Pixie Dust Paint Company Story…..

One night I was overly tired, my mind was racing and I couldn’t sleep (a normal night for me), a light bulb went off and I had an idea!  Usually those around me go running every time I say “I have an idea”…  So in the late mid-night hour I told Johnathan about my paint powder idea, after about 10 minutes of thinking I told him “we should call it Pixie Dust Paint” (as a reference to making normal paint magical).  I had an idea, a name, and that was about it.

I will now rewind about 4 decades to the back end story.  I grew up in a small town in Oregon, I loved dogs, sheep, puppies, lambs, painting, sewing, and decorating (yes all at once).  There was never a time that I was not repainting my room, moving furniture around, shopping at yard sales for bargain finds (I hear they call that “pickin” now).  There was also not a month that went by that my father would be screaming at me for painting furniture, “YOU DON’T PAINT WOOD”!!!  I’m sure my father is looking down at me now just shaking his head, and if he was here I would tell him “See Daddy, all along I was onto something”.  Fast forward to 15 ish years ago when I bought my first house (tiny little cottage…seems so long ago). I was on a mission to “Shabby Chic” my tiny cottage.  At the time pinks, greens, stripes, and floral were the sign of the time and I even had a white picket fence headboard!  I loved to paint furniture and I was an avid dumpster diver.  I have no shame in diving for something that has bones and structure and is just calling my name.   When my Dad passed away in 2012, I moved my Mom here to Florida with me all the way from Oregon!  Mom was a florist by trade but she and my Dad had several ventures over the decades, of which most included recycled treasures.  After Mom got settled here and the building of house #3 was complete we felt it was time to start looking for a place for her to start her next venture and Shell Point Cottage was born!

So where does Pixie Dust Chalky Paint Powder come into all of this?!?!  Well I had a new house and Mom had a store and a garage full of projects waiting to come to life!  I started a search for the colors that I wanted and it seemed like I always had to “settle” for whatever they had. Boutique chalk paints always comes pre-mixed and you get 20ish colors to pick from.  I need like 200 or more to pick from!  So after spending several hundred dollars on paint that I had to “settle” for, my wheels started turning!  One day I came across a Chalk Paint Powder at a local store and bought it!  $18 for this bag and it only made a quart, so much for saving money, but at least I could pick out my own paint color.  So I rushed home, mixed up my paint and painted a hutch for Mom’s shop and It was just ok…  It didn’t have the texture or feel that I loved from the other brands of pre-mix paint.  So after several months of research of minerals, powders, etc.  I finally found a combination of Clay, Chalk, Calcium and Limestone that was amazing, 100% safe, 100%non-toxic and it’s even edible (but I dare you to eat it…yuck).  It was like having my cake and eating it too.   I’m not going to lie and tell you that the 1st batch was amazing, it took about 10-12 tries to get it down, and much frustration from my Mom as she was my test candidate.

We had dozens of mason jars full of lumps, clumps, and god knows what else, but often times if you fail enough you will eventually succeed and Pixie Dust Paint Company was born!  Mom has been using Pixie Dust Chalk Paint Powder since early 2014 and it’s all she uses.  We begun packaging it back in mid 2014, and I was so excited to see it was SELLING!  People were actually interested, coming back for more and more and eventually at the end of 2014 we repackaged it to offer more to the consumer for less money and begun a journey to offer it to other small town shop owners. Currently our products are available in 30 states, online and we are working to bring it to our Canadian friends at the end of 2016.  (EXCITING)!!!!

A little more about me (as if the above was not enough).  I’m an entrepreneur who is Mom to the best little boy in the world who makes me laugh, cry, and scream all at the same time.  I love to travel, I Iove people,  I love blogging, I love photography, I love my 5 PUGS, I love Pug Rescue, I love to sew, I love interior design, I love VW’s, and I love life! For my real job, I work in finance, I run a 501c3 non-profit organization, and I’m a social media ninja (not sure what that means, heard it on Shark Tank and it sounded cool).  I would like to think I can do it all, but I have a bucket list of all the things I still have left to do and if I shared some of them here someone would likely steal my ideas and retire at 40!  Thank you a million times over for making it to the end of this story!  For me and my family it’s just the beginning….
